Finding MT's Place in the Union Army

The Chicago Tribune on 14 November 1879 printed a diagram of the seating arrangements at the Palmer House banquet. Below is a detail of about half of it. (To see the whole diagram, CLICK HERE.) The raised dais where Grant sat is at the right. If you want to try to find MT's assigned seat yourself, you need to know he's listed as "Saml. L. Clemens." If you just want to know where he sat for six hours before climbing up onto the table to launch his speech at Grant, and conquer the conqueror through humor, you can simply click anywhere on the diagram -- that will bring up another version of it, where MT's place is marked in blue.
