  • 1886
  • MAY 4: A riot breaks out at a labor rally in Haymarket Square, Chicago. 8 people are killed and 76 are wounded when a bomb is thrown and police open fire on the crowd.   [Chip]

  • MAY 4: In Haymarket Square, Chicago, a group of policemen try to break up a protest against police action of the previous day in which workers were killed. An unknown person threw a bomb which killed several officers, and the event became known as the "Haymarket Riot."   [Sergio]

  • OCTOBER 28: The Statue of Liberty, a gift from France to the U.S., is dedicated.   [Matt].

  • Samuel L. Gompers founds the American Federation of Labor.   [Jessica]

  • The Berlin Conference recognizes the Congo Free State as under the sovereignty of Belgium and King Leopold, which starts the "scramble for Africa" that becomes Colonialism for almost a century to come.   [Krista]

  • The Berlin Act allows European powers to partition Africa. It sets up rules for colonizing Africa, presents resolutions to the slave trade, and provides care for the African people.   [Carla]
