SOME FACTS
c1861: 10-12 million buffalo live on the Great Plains in huge herds
1871: legislation to protect buffalo first introduced into Congress
1872-1874: Peak of southern hunt, involving up to 5000 hunters
-- 4,374,000 buffalo killed for their hides
1872: buffalo hunters ship 1.2 million hides east
1874: Congress passes bill to regulate killing buffalo, but President Grant vetoes it
1875: Southern herd exterminated
1880: Assault on Northern herd begins
1883: wild buffaloes effectively extinct; a few small herds are preserved
