SIGNED ALIAS MARK TWAIN

Sam.l. L. Clemens alias Mark Twain

Page 1 of this 1874 letter shows MT's fancifully interwoven "M T S L C" emblem at work on a letterhead. The second page, in its own way, shows the two parts of his identity in a more ambivalent relationship. By itself his use of the word "alias" to describe his alter ego seems fairly innocuous, but when it follows a sentence about "the base coin of [his own] assumed name," it suggests more pejorative implications -- especially considering how insistently MT spent his career exposing and debunking "shams" and "frauds."
