Picturing Those "Old Times"


  "Old Times on the Mississippi" originally appeared in 1876 in The Atlantic Magazine in seven monthly installments -- without illustrations. The piece was published again as 14 chapters in Life on the Mississippi (1883). Life was a subscription book, and so "lavishly" illustrated by three different artists. Here are seven of those illustrations, all but the FRONTISPIECE from the "Old Times" section (Chapters 4 - 17):
