Like Sam Clemens, Thomas Hart Benton was born in Missouri. In 1935 he was commissioned by the state to paint a mural for the capitol building. When it was finished in 1936, the mural -- titled "A Social History of the State of Missouri" -- included two fictional figures: Huck and Jim.
