MASTHEAD: LESLIE'S ILLUSTRATED NEWSPAPER

Images from Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper: 1869-1870

[Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper was, as its title suggests, one of the first American periodicals to feature copious illustrations. Published in New York, from 1855 to the early 20th century it boasted a national circulation of several hundred thousand copies. Except for those who lived out West, few of its readers would have been likely to see Chinese immigrants in the flesh, so images like the ones published in the paper doubtless had a major influence on the way those Americans "saw" this part of the population. Leslie himself was an immigrant from England.]
