SIGNED CLEMENS

MT as Clemens

This is the sixth and last page of a letter MT wrote in the spring on 1871 to Elisha Bliss, head of the American Publishing Company. The author is in the middle of a manic stage in the composition of Roughing It; the publisher is beginning to produce the prospectus for it. The letter's most interesting feature in MT's proposed dedication for the book: "To the Late Cain" -- which is on the page below (and was never used in the book). But this letter is also included as an example of the signature "Clemens," which MT seems to have used most frequently in this kind of professional context.
