SIGNED MARK TWAIN S L CLEMENS

MT as Mark Twain S.L. Clemens

This note dates from the years 1901-1903 (the black border around the letter indicates MT is writing on mourning stationery, but in this case it's not clear whose death is being remembered). The note is intended to vouch for Clara's maid, but it's interesting to note how many different kinds of introductions are necessary. MT obviously feels he'll be best recognized as "Mark Twain," but then he has to add that he is also "S.L. Clemens," and that his daughter (Twain's daughter? Clemens' daughter?) is "Miss Clara Clemens." The maid remains unnamed.
