The American Publishing Company's subscription edition of Innocents Abroad included "two hundred and thirty-four illustrations," as the publicity put it. They were mainly the work of True Williams, who illustrated other MT books, including Tom Sawyer. "The pictures are good, if I do say it myself," MT wrote Mary Fairbanks on 10 May 1869. The selections below attempt to represent the main emphases of those two hundred and thirty-four illustrations: to allow American readers to see the sights of the Old World, and to reinforce the humor of MT's interaction with that world. Sixteen additional full-page and many other smaller illustrations are available in the Sales Prospectus. |
