Anna Elizabeth
Dickinson
Anna Elizabeth
Dickinson (1842-1933), was
a family friend of the Langdons and associate of Clemens on the
lecture circuit. An advocate of abolition, she was one of the most
successful lecturers on the circuit because she argued from a
political point of view instead of an emotional one(Trombley
143). Clemens and
Dickinson were known rivals but "it was likely that Dickinson's oral
performance rather than her personality earned Clemens's
approval"(Trombley 147).
