ELEVATION: 7500 feet above sea level
c. 1824: "Mountain men" Jedediah Smith and James Clyman discover the pass,
    establishing a route for wagons to cross the Rockies
1842: Congress authorizes Fremont to map a road to the South Pass
1841-1866: approximately 350,000 emigrants travel through the Pass,
    including pioneers on the Oregon Trail and prospectors heading for California
