Photographing "Mark Twain"

When Sam Clemens was born the camera had not yet been invented. By the time he died, newspapers and magazines were beginning to fill up with photos. The republic of celebrity images had been born, with him as arguably its leading citizen. By some calculations, the single most often photographed man of his times was Mark Twain -- or is it Sam Clemens we see in these photographs?
